Back To Print
Tuesday July 07th 2009, 11:03 amOur first issue of Detective Comics is selling out and we are going back to press. Here is the new cover design by Dave and I…
I thought I’d add a little commentary to this. This cover design was literally at the last minute. We got the notice from DC Monday afternoon about going back to press and they wanted a new cover FAST! Like the very next morning fast. So the best solution was to come up with a simple design and add The Question as an additional point of interest. Since I had almost no time to get an image to Dave for him to have time to toy with it, we had to go with a wash and marker sketch look that Dave would colorize different parts of the drawing. I did the sketch art, scanned it, placed it into the blue circle and red lighting bolt design, then finished it up by adding the colored text. This then went off to Dave, and after discussing things with him a bit the next morning, it was done. The entire process was accomplished in roughly 6 hrs total. I’m happy with it even though I had no time to really do a tighter drawing. The looseness in combination with the simple graphic palette approach, working in tandem with the logo font style, looks classic and modern at the same time. A rush job, but a nice stylish one I think.

Congrats to you and Greg on the success of “Tec” so far! Its got to be a wonderful feeling that after the long wait and hype, it’s being received so well!
Comment by Erica 07.07.09 @ 4:11 pmJust posted this over on my blog, as well. Congrats to you, Greg, and Dave!
Suh-WEET cover, too.

Cully you are a part of this too, my friend, so congrats back to you. Your contribution is invaluable.
Comment by jwh3 07.07.09 @ 8:31 pmThe new cover would make a fantastic poster!
Detective Comics has been the highlight of the whole year (in terms of comics). The most beautiful art I’ve seen in ages, Greg’s writing is top notch, and Cully’s art on the Question all make for one heck of comic!
Comment by Jen 07.08.09 @ 9:51 amHey there Jen
Thanks and I hope you will still feel the same as the series progresses.
You’re as good as Alex Ross, without being like Alex Ross. You’re by far one of the greatest living comic artists out there, right now. Keep up the good work.
Comment by Christopher Moonlight @ Moonlight Art Magazine 07.09.09 @ 1:11 pmI love the loose look of it. I agree that it makes it have a more classic look. For both of these characters, they have a very rich history and even though they have been replaced with more modern versions, it was nice to see them drawn with this type of style.
Comment by Nick 07.12.09 @ 1:53 pmMr. Williams:
just blown away by your Batwoman work. The book is on my coffee table and i open it at least once a day to savor the art.
That said, any talk of merchandise from DC Direct? I’d be first in line to purchase a statue based on your Batwoman art.
Comment by Don 07.14.09 @ 5:35 pmHey there Don
Thank you very much.
We haven’t had any word from DC Direct but are hoping to.
Comment by jwh3 07.14.09 @ 9:09 pm6hrs? I have waited for 12 weeks for commissions that look like a 4 year-old with a crayon did it, next to your work on this. I am bummed I didn’t discover your work earlier, you are a true “master” of comic (and I imagine fine)art.
Comment by Dean Summers 07.14.09 @ 9:21 pmp.s. I am making EVERYONE I know who reads comics in Australia pick up this title 🙂

Awesome. I like that it is a different piece of art. I get annoyed when titles just use interior art from the comic as the cover for the second printing variants.
