Jonah hex #35 art will also be on sale beginning tomorrow July 17th.

That spread is scary gorgeous in black and white!

Great to hear the art is being made available, I know a lot of people were asking for it.

Your art on this book is inspiring, I really hope other artists take some gambles with unusual layouts because of it.

Were there any pages you just had to keep to yourself because you were so happy with them?

Comment by A.C.K. 07.16.09 @ 6:41 pm

Hey there A.C.K.
Thanks very much. Yeah I do tend to keep a page or two. Less being happy with something and more to do with having a good documentation of the physical work in terms of my progress. rather than just the printed page or a copy.

Hah – snuck that Nephilim shirt in there!

Yes I did 🙂

I love the new comic, and am really enjoying the art and story. I cannot wait for the opportunity to maybe own something which has such emotion and heart. So beautifully drawn.

Thanks again.

Well, that went by super-fast. Holy smokes! I’m just glad you’ve got more issues coming out, J.H., or else I’d be out of luck. Man oh man…

Boy was this the wrong day to take a long lunch. Can I ask how much the cover and the 2 page spreads went for so that I know how much I’ll be spending in the future?

Whoowoo!

I am about the happiest person in the world right now.

I got a page and I love it. My very first piece of original comic art and I’m simply thrilled beyond my ability to express it.

Thank you for making the pages available.

Will you be signing the pages?

I was wondering, why do the headings read Batwoman 1, rather than Detective Comics 854? Just curious.

I feel like a little kid !!

Thanks again.
Pam

Hey there Ryan
Sorry you got squeezed out. I’m really surprised at how quickly things went.

Comment by jwh3 07.17.09 @ 2:20 pm

Hey there cheekster
I hope you had a good lunch at least. The cover was $2500 and the spreads with Batwoman on them mostly ranged from $1200 to $2000.

Comment by jwh3 07.17.09 @ 2:24 pm

Hello Pam
Thanks again. The art on the first issue or so says Batwoman instead of Detective Comics because when I was working on it the plan was for that to be the name of the title, then DC decided to place us in Detective Comics after we had been working on the material for awhile.

Comment by jwh3 07.17.09 @ 2:27 pm

That’s what one would call a good problem, J.H. 😉

I look forward to seeing more.

Ugh. I wasn’t allowed to take a break at work to shop, sorry 🙁 Hopefully, the next round I’ll have some flexibility.

Comment by A.C.K. 07.17.09 @ 7:23 pm

Sorry to hear that A.C.K.

This is one of my less cerebral questions, but how long does a double page layout like that take to do from start to finish? I ask, because I’m wondering if I spend enough time on my pages. By the way, the new Detective Comics was sold out everywhere I went. My comic guy (who didn’t get a copy for himself) is going to get me the second printing. He’s not to familiar with your work, but got very excited when I took him through the pages of a Promethea collection in his store.

I was just looking through some of you gallery and was wondering if you ever make prints of your commissioned works available for sale?

I love the “Batwoman-birthday-commission”. It’s beautiful.

Hey there Christopher
Some double page spreads can take me 4 days to do.

It’s kinda weird that your comic store owner did not know my work, considering I’ve been working for a major publisher for over a decade.

Comment by jwh3 07.20.09 @ 11:22 am

Hey there Pam
The commission works can’t be done as prints because the copyright of the characters belong to the publishers. Some of them appear in my sketchbooks though.

Comment by jwh3 07.20.09 @ 11:25 am

4 days? And here I thought if I ever worked for a major publisher, I’d be expected to crank out a page a day. I feel worlds better about my future now. As far as my comic guy goes, I know he’s read comics with your work in it, but never really took the time to see why your pages are so much better than many others. He’s in his late teens, so he was under 10 when you started seeing print. Once I sat down with him and showed him how you design pages, and why you make (at least why I think you make) the choices you do, artistically, he got very enthusiastic about your work. That’s just my way of fighting the good fight, ya know? Cheers.

Hey there Christopher
I know, 4 days sounds long, doesn’t it? I tell myself the same thing, but when I try to step back a little and see that 4 days is for pencils, inks and some tonal work for 2 pages, I can look at the speed a little more objectively. Since I’m inking my own work, I’m essentially doing 2 jobs. Even with that, I have a hard time justifying that pace for myself.

And thanks for being my advocate with a younger reader. I always like new people catching on to my work. The more the merrier.

Comment by jwh3 07.20.09 @ 6:39 pm

No problem. I haven’t been as exited about another artist (like I have for you) since Alex Ross and Dave McKean… well among a few others. It’s not so much that I’m an advocate, when I think about it. It’s just that when I get excited about something, I can’t shut up, and I’ll talk about it to whoever will listen, even some poor souls that don’t have a clue what I’m talking about. Sometimes it frightens people, I think. That’s why I started Moonlight Art Magazine.

Comment by Christopher Moonlight @ Moonlight Art Magazine 07.20.09 @ 8:56 pm

Thanks for thinking of me in such fine company. I get the same way when I’m excited about something too.

Comment by jwh3 07.21.09 @ 12:42 am

man, that’s great, I studied a lot your work on the “Island of mr. Mayhew”; as we get those issues on a big sized book in France.
I really apreciate the variety in your drawing; the fact you add some inkwash here and there… etc.

I noticed lots for flat colors too,(on the detective comics you did with paul dini for example) Is that a choice from you , and then something you told the colorist to do?

As DC doesn’ t sell really well in here, we’ll probably don’t have detective comics anymore; or not before a while.
I’m gonna check for the orginal version in my comics book store soon; that’s sound great; and I really hope the story is good too 🙂

Keep up the great work !

Comment by Ced 07.21.09 @ 5:05 am

Hey there Ced
Thank you and yes, the choice of flat color in spots is mine. I work very closely with my colorists to achieve different effects that the art is needing to gain a certain emotional aspect that enhances the story. Which is the same reason that I use different drawing techniques and styles.

Comment by jwh3 07.21.09 @ 10:54 am

great stuff man. The way you lay out your pages is so dynamic and adds dimension to the book, if you ever feel like making a move from dc to the oh so glamorous pages of indy comics give me a shout lol

Comment by Curtis 07.24.09 @ 4:18 pm

Thanks, Curtis.

Comment by jwh3 07.27.09 @ 6:29 pm

Well, I got my page and I’m completely thrilled. I’ve ordered a special archival frame.

I had thought the art for 855 was to go on sale on the 30th, but I see that’s changed…

…I guess I have some more time to save up for another purchase.

I was wondering if you had any idea how many pages would be made available when the time comes?

~ Pam

Comment by Pam 07.29.09 @ 1:23 am

Hey there Pam
That sounds very nice. And all of 855 will go up on the 10th of August.
