Hey there Ralph
I’m glad you enjoyed it. We just put the finishing touches on the next chapter. Hopefully you will find it just as strong.
A beautifully done story…love the non-costumed moments the most…the kisses between kate and sophie and kate and renee…so well done….Bravo !!!
Comment by Raymond 11.25.09 @ 8:32 pmI can’t believe you’re able to churn out so many different styles and pull them off flawlessly. You are the best in the business. These last two issues really prove that.
Comment by Brandan 11.26.09 @ 8:36 amThis chameleon shorthand you and Stewart have going is only getting better. Jock has tough shoes to fill…
Comment by kudamonon 11.26.09 @ 1:59 pmHello JHW3, hope the week was good to you. Two questions (if you can answer):
1.) The design on ‘Alice’s’ costume (abdomen), does it mean anything?
2.) The childhood memories in the last two issues, is this what ‘Alice’ remembers? I assumed Kate was having them…
Keep up the good work and thank you.
Comment by kudamono 11.27.09 @ 11:45 amThe design on Alice’s second costume abdomen area is in loose reference the idea of “The Angel Of Death” notion in my head for this character. If you’ll also note that the head scarf gives the slight reference to the “Virgin Mary” and we use some of the colors that are traditionally associated with Mary as well, mixed with Alice’s whites and pastels. The whites are in reference to the colors of a Pope, or other similar high religious leaders. Some of the Victorian sublte aspects to her are in reference to Queens of the British Empire of old, this is more evident in her first costume. These are used as twisted interpretations of religious iconography and figures of power and influence.
The childhood memories belong to both of them, they both had these experiences after all. But since Kate is the star of the story it becomes easier to associate it from her point of view I suppose.

Comment by David 11.28.09 @ 12:11 pmSuper, super issue!!
And now, the question you’ve been expecting… when does the art go up for sale?!?
Sincerely, I loved it.
Comment by Pam 11.29.09 @ 11:57 amDetective is the best book on the market right now, period. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember the last time I was really blown away by art like I was on the last few pages of 859. I have been reading and collecting for years, and its a pleasure to view your work.
Comment by Just Mike 11.29.09 @ 1:38 pmYeah, this book rules. Easily the best comic being published today. This arc is even better than the last, which was one of the most refreshing stories I’ve read in a while.
Comment by Adam 11.30.09 @ 1:59 pmFavorite page may have been 20. It was incredible–freaking incredible–how the art style changes when she meets Batman for the first time….Like a New World was opened up to her.
Comment by Ryan Burton 11.30.09 @ 3:19 pmI am so in love with this book. There has not been a title that motivated me to make the Wednesday trip in a few years. The week Tec’ is scheduled to come out, I now clear my lunch hour.
I am in love with the art, story and character.
Mr. Williams, please say that you and DC/DC Direct are at least talking about some type of Batwoman product that ties directly to your designs and art. Action figure, statue, lithograph, design book – my money is ready to spend.
Thank you for making life a bit brighter through your work.
Comment by DF 12.01.09 @ 9:56 amHey there DF
Thank you very much for the kind words. And I’ve passed along your wishes to my editor.
Wonderful issue!
Not much I can say that hasn’t already been said I see. The Bat encounter was captured so powerfully, and I loved how creative you got with the beast men!
I’ll second DF’s request for a figurine to be done based on your Batwoman. I haven’t been into comic memorabilia for years but adding an item like that to my collection would definitely be worth my money.
I can’t wait for the origin’s concluding issue, and I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.
Comment by Aria 12.01.09 @ 3:09 pmHey there Aria
Thank you so much! I’ll pass along a wishes for a figurine to my editor.
Frankly, Batwoman needs a LOT of merchandising… t-shirts, statues, busts, posters, lithos, etc.
Put in a good word, would you please!
🙂

Comment by Pam 12.07.09 @ 4:45 amJ3 – I was wondering, is it common to change artists in the middle of a successful run? I know Jock will be taking the art chores on Detective Comics/Batwoman for a few issues and I was wondering, frankly… why?!?
Comment by Pam 12.10.09 @ 7:36 amHey there Pam
Well the thing of it is this, Jock’s issues are NOT a direct continuation of where the 7th issue chapter will end. The situation arose that I was going to get behind on the schedule but had at least another 5 issues of story to finish. So everyone decided to give our story a little breather and break at a logical place and have a 3 or 4 part story that doesn’t need to directly tie in into our main story, so this is where Jock’s art was brought in, to accommodate that. So I would be working on our second half while Jock’s story was being worked on allowing me a chance to catch up. I say this but I don’t want to give the impression that Jock’s story won’t be worth reading because it will be. Now here’s the trick, like I said we were supposed come back to finish our 12/13 issue story, it ends up being one long arc, but things are afoot that changes this plan greatly. Some of this is out of our control but should work out to where we will continue in another venue sometime next year. If it all works out like we think it will, there will be forthcoming big news from us or DC about what is next. If you think a little about what I’m saying you’ll figure out what I’m getting at.
😉
Wow… I love the sounds of big things being afoot. LOL
And if I’m picking up what you’re putting down – I’m going to be totally thrilled with the outcome.
I’ll wait for the big announcement, of course, and in the meantime – I’ll keep my fingers crossed!!!

This is easily beoming one of the best backstory / origin stories that I’ve read (and marvelled at the great eye candy art) in years. I loved the funny line towards the end (a great nudge, nudge, wink, wink line)!
Hope you and Wendy have a Happy Thanksgiving!
