Batman Beyond…

Friday April 30th 2010, 4:57 pm

Here is the variant cover for Batman Beyond #1. Presented in stages of construction. This one was a bit unusual because I had to draw it and then sort of take it apart and put it back together. I was a little worried about this one because I only had a vague idea of what I wanted to do it after drawing. I knew that the inked version was far from feeling finished to me because I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. All I knew is that I wanted to try out some different things stylistically than I normally do. So I winged a lot of it, trying out a different drawing look on Bruce Wayne, something less realistic. Same goes for the color processes, I approached it very organically, not knowing where it was all headed. Experimenting until I was satisfied with the results. I hope you find it interesting…

Hey,
thanks for uploading your Artprogress!
The Cover looks really awesome! I was wondering at what dpi do you scan your traditional drawings. is it 300dpi or 600dpi?

Hey there Sedat
The company standard specs are 600dpi ay 67% of original size. And I’m glad you like it.

Man, this is truly beautiful. Thanks for the breakdown of how you approach the cover, all the way to the end product, it is really cool. It was free comic book day today and my local comic shop has 50% off all back stock. I picked up all the Desolation Jones issues, they look great. Thanks for bringing the comic medium to another level.

Wow. That is super cool. I love when you post the progression you follow when doing a cover or panel.

It’s just so impressive to those of us who can’t do a decent stick-figure.

This is incredibly sexy, man! Love the composition and the body language. Well done.

Hey there Pam
I’m glad you enjoy these little process things. I wish I had more time to post an entire page of Batwoman from the very beginning, showing every detailed step. Taking it from the very first panel in to the end. It would be a lot to post but could be interesting if I ever find the time to scan every little step in that process.

Hey there Ryan
Thanks, It’s cool that people seem to like it, considering I really didn’t know what to do with this one, due to being less familiar with this character.

YOU ARE SUCH A TEASE !!!

Oh, come on, please Please PLEASE!!

I would absolutely love to see something like that.

If you can’t find the time here – maybe something like that would be a good idea for an “extra” in one of the collections/graphic novels?

Hey there Pam
I’ll see if I can try doing something like that one of these days, in some form or another.

This is ALL SORTS of AWESOME. Thanks for sharing your process!

Hey JW3,

Ditto Pam’s request (although, I know if this is THE Pam I think she is), you won’t hear the end of it until this happens.

BTW, you’ve just sold me on buying my first more expensive variant cover. You did for BB what you already have Batwoman, made him look and feel real.

And, before you say it, the thanks is all mine!

Thank you!

Wayne

thanks very much.

Hey there Wayne
No. Thank you! I wish you luck in getting a copy. DC seems to be making those difficult to get a hold of. I think all of my variants are 1 in 25 except for the Tom Strong being 1 in 10.

Hey JW3,

Two more questions…

1. Are the breakdowns above merely digital copies or are these proofs available to buy? I love the B/W and the color logo-less versions of your BB cover.

2. Will you be in San Diego or wherever they’re holding CCI this summer?

Safe travels, in any event, and look forward to seeing your work on Batwoman sometime sooner than later…

Thanks again,

Wayne

Hey there Wayne
The color versions are digital colors, which is standard. The black and white is the actual original art that was scanned for the color to be applied to. And yes I suppose I will be selling the original at some point.

As for the San Diego show, unfortunately my schedule is going to be so tight that I won’t be there, unless I HAVE to be for some reason.

Excellent work as always, Jim. I wish you could draw, like, everything.
