I would definitely love to see some creator-owned titles by you in the future! Are there any particular genres of special interest to you right now?

On a side-note, I’m a little disconcerted about BW. #1 was delayed awhile ago but I’ve seen no new solicits for it in the months coming yet. Is there anything you can tell us about why it was delayed or when we should hear something about it?

Thanks!

Hey there Nicholas
My tastes in comics vary wildly, so my creator owned concepts do as well. The toughest part in getting this sort of thing out to the public is making sure they are financially viable enough. Finding a publisher willing to take something on that is a new concept and be able make a living too is a tough balance to gain. My favorite thing to do though is mix genres in ways to twist them into something with a fresh perspective. I like taking opposing genres or ideas and mashing them together to see what comes of it. So that might give you a little insight into the various themes we’ll be exploring in Batwoman. The Batwoman series will have a fluid mashing of genres and ideas, that blend in and out of each over a course of few different storylines, Rest assured it is coming. Things will be revving up soon.

Hey J3 – Did you ever consider doing a self-published comic or graphic novel? Even a small “collectors” run with pre-orders, maybe? Or what about a novel, a la Greg Rucka?

Looking foward, eagerly, to the Batwoman run!!

Hey there Pam
Yeah we’ve thought about self publishing too, but as a bit of a last resort. Being an artist that needs time for the work, self publishing can be hard based on production costs. We’ll see what shakes out in the future. The trick is being able to make a living while at it.

And yes I’ve an idea or two slowly being shaped for a possible novel. Some pretty far out stuff. Thats something I might try to self publish as well, if I can manage getting it into a shape that I find satisfactory.

That sounds great! One of my issues with a lot of ongoings is they can tend to find a comfort zone and then stagnate. A lot of people, writers and publishers, are afraid to try something fresh and don’t even realize it.
While I’m a big fan of Greg, in a way I was even more excited for the ongoing after I heard you’d be writing it. I haven’t read any of your written work yet, but considering the layouts and spreads you’ve envisioned based from other people’s scripts, the prospect of you drawing AND writing sounded like a formula for something really cutting-edge.

Can’t wait! Best wishes.

Hey there Nicholas
Thanks for the enthusiasm. As for cutting edge, I don’t know how much of what we’re doing would be considered that. For me the story comes first, and even though we’re going to be trying some different things, the main goal was to make sure it feels like a natural progression of what came previously. Getting the characters and their motivations correct, and treating what we’re doing as true extension of what came before. I do want the the series to be taking risks, but I also want it to be accessible as well, similar thinking to what Greg and I had done.

Well, put me on the “notify” list if you ever decide to self-publish! Seriously, that would be so cool.

Just saw the Batman Inc # 4 issue featuring Batwoman. What a cool cover … did I miss a mention of it somewhere here?!?

Hey there Pam
Thanks a lot, and glad you like the cover to Batman Inc. number 4. I had posted the covers that I’d done a short time ago. But didn’t post when the issue came out as it really had nothing to do with me beyond the cover. I had no input on Kate and her role in the story. Her appearance in Batman Inc. really doesn’t fit with her continuity, so I didn’t want to draw too much attention to it. Beyond that, I hope you found Grant’s interpretation enjoyable.

Hey J3 – Is the hold-up around Batwoman # 1 a possible tie in to the DC Comics reboot of # 1 issues that they announced today?

Comment by pam 06.01.11 @ 7:37 am

Its in the realm of possibility
😉
