Only a few things to comment on. Not much else going on other than trying to get work done.

BATBRAINS…
Well my first issue of my Batman arc with Grant Morrison arrived this week. It came out pretty well but I think the following issues will be better. Dave Stewart did a bang up job with the color and it worked really well with all of the wash tones I did. The response has been mostly positive. I’m going to miss working on Batman but I’m getting ready to prep for my next gig, which is ‘bat’ related and I will be on this one for awhile. I’m currently on the tail end of the last issue of this club of heroes arc. This stuff has been more time consuming than I anticipated but the results are nice.

MIDNIGHT CROSSING…
The ninth issue came out recently, wrapping up the four part ‘map of midnight’ arc. I’m about to start the covers for issues 14 and 15. I’m having a really good time working on these. It gives me a different creative outlet from the DCU stuff. Also if you haven’t read this series yet pick up the first trade, which is out now. It’s titled ‘cut here’.

FOR THE LOVE OF JOHN…
We’ve been watching JOHN FROM CINCINNATI every week and we can’t wait to see what happens tonight for the final episode of the season. This show has been brilliant since day one. Thought provoking and challenging, its pure genius. If you’re not already watching then you better get to it and catch up on it’s existential bliss.

A BLUE TIME TO BE HAD…
I’ve just finished reading BLUESMAN by Rob Vollmar and Pablo G. Callejo. What a great little thriller set in the deep south during a very depressive time. The characters are engaging and the fully rendered black and white artwork is just amazing with it’s authentic detail and mood. I see a little bit of Crumb in the art. The story itself obviously wants to convey a fondness for the blues without it being directly about that. It’s a good character piece with a real sense of drama mixed with crime fiction. You really feel like this story is about real people going through a very tough time and all the faces look like they’ve really lived a rough life, loaded with personality. go pick it up.

When are DC making the BAT***** announcement, anyway?

Jim, I’m sure that your Batman #667 is being reviewed favorable all over the blogsphere, but two I wanted to point out to your are over at the All Star Savage Critics blog (Brian Hibbs’ San Francisco store Comix Experience):
http://savagecritic.com (or just do a search on Savage Critic), read Graeme McMillan’s Sunday, August 12th post and scroll down a bit to a post from Saturday titled “If I Don’t Finish Before Sunrise…” posted by Jog. They have a good grasp of your artistic wizardry.

I also loved the Bluesman books. I haven’t checked out John From Cincinatti yet, but I have heard that even people that don’t get it can’t stop watching! Have you checked out Kat’s new LA Ink show yet (it just started last Tuesday)?

hey there ralph
thanks for showing me those reviews. i had only seen the one from jog and have been haunting message boards to gauge reactions.
i had heard rumours that bluesman might become a film. do you know if there is any truth to that?
and yes we watched LA ink too. i think we are going to have to go see the shop in person and see if one of them will do my next tat. i tried to get chris graver but he has yet to respond to my emails for months now. my next tat is complicated and i’m going to need someone great to do it.

hey there mark
i’m not sure what is going on with announcments for my next project but i’m about to start work on it in the next couple of weeks. so things are moving forward. i do know the schedule for it has dramatically changed so that may be the reason for the delay. so word might not be officially released for awhile.

Thats a hell of a play list.
I’ve been thinking about picking up that isobel Campbel album for a bit now. I may just have to run out and get it now.

JH,

Loved Batman 667. I think what amazes me about your art is your ability to pay homage to different art styles.

Also, great taste in music – I’ll have to grab that Siouxsie remasters now that I know it’s out. She’s also got a solo album coming out the middle of next month called mantaray.

Jim,

Hi. Rob Vollmar, writer of BLUESMAN here. Man, thanks so much for helping us spread the word. It means double coming from you as my wife and I are HUGE admirers of your work.

We have indeed sold the development option for BLUESMAN to a reputable producer and are currently watching that process unfold. There are some pretty amazing developments underway that I can’t fully divulge but Keb Mo is officially attached to produce the eventual soundtrack.

My first book with Pablo, THE CASTAWAYS, was re-released from NBM in hardcover this year with a softcover edition hitting the market in November. I also have a 5 issue mini-series with artist mpMann called Inanna’s Tears that is coming out right now from Archaia Studios Press. It is set in ancient Sumer and speculates on the transition from temple matriarchy to partiarchal kingship circa 3000 BCE.

Thanks again for your kind words!

Best, Rob Vollmar
