Batwoman joins the second prints
Wednesday September 14th 2011, 7:34 pmWell, as everyone can see the new DC initiative is paying off in spades. Everything is selling out it seems and having to go back to press. Yay us!! I’m happy that the response has been so good, and this is with orders that were much higher than everyone anticipated. So its a good time for DC, and it also seems that fans are enjoying most of what they’re trying out too.
I’m hearing that Batwoman has become hard to find in some places depending on where you’re located, but more copies should be ready soon.
I want to say thank you to all of the fans that have supported our efforts all of this time. Your enthusiasm has been humbling. Thank you to Greg Rucka for creating the foundation of Kate Kane with me on Elegy, and then graciously letting us take over the wheel. Thank you to Mike Siglain for getting this whole thing going before leaving DC. I’d also like to thank everyone involved on our team for this first issue of Batwoman’s continuing story, Dave Stewart, Todd Klein, Mike Marts, Janelle Asselin, all of the editorial support team at DC, and most of all my partner in crime, Haden Blackman. Haden and I’ve been friends and creating together for many years before tackling this version of Batwoman. His partnership with me on this has been priceless, and we feel the best is yet to come, or so we hope.
And foremost, I want to thank my wife, Wendy, everything she does makes this possible.
While waiting for new second prints, or for issue 2, please continue to share comments here and also drop Haden a line at the link below. I know he’d love it.

Hey there SoliderHawk
I’m thrilled you enjoyed it. Thanks for giving us a shot and for the very kind comments.
I expected a lot from this comic. It delivered.
Comment by Shawn Taft 09.14.11 @ 10:12 pmHi, I’m an artist doing another of the New 52 series, and I’m BLOWN by your amazing talent. I didn’t know your work until now (shame on me) and I’ve become a HUGE fan of you. Now I need to find all your work! And maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to buy an original piece of you. Now I feel talentless, sigh!
Comment by Mikel Janín 09.15.11 @ 1:27 amHey Mr. Williams,
Congratulations on the 2nd printing!
Iam an artist myself and I am amazed by your stunning artwork! it is fascinating and breathetaking at the same time!
I would love to know if you ink your artwork with a crow quill or pens?
I keep checking your high resolution scans, but cant exactly tell wether its a pen or not!
However, keep the great artwork up!
Regards from Germany 🙂

Comment by SedatOezgen 09.15.11 @ 6:09 amGorgeous book, just gorgeous. Really looking forward to seeing more of the story.
There is some speculation going around, so I thought I’d come to the horses’ mouth on this. Renee Montoya on the wall there. Is that showing that she’s re-instated as a regular detective, or is it a memorial? I thought this was written before the new 52 was even proposed, so I am not really sure what her status would have been.
Thanks so much for the beautiful book~ Amy
Comment by Taterpie 09.15.11 @ 8:21 amThis issue was great as expected. And, of course, well worth the wait. Your comments that you are already surpassing this issue with your work on subsequent issues really makes this THE most highly anticipated book on my calendar.
Re: Mikel Janin’s feeling talentless now, just wait for his Justice League Dark in two weeks. You will be blown away. (Easily the second most anticipated book in the relaunch)
Hello Mikel Janin
Thank you. I’ll have to see what you’re working on too. And don’t worry about not seeing my work before, there are always new people discovering my work.
Hey there Sedat
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I ink using pens and brushes and then apply washes and copic tones.
Hi there Amy
The photo of Renee is on a wall of officers of special commendation, relatively recent past and present. Renee is from the past, and the photo symbolizes Kate needing to leave the past behind to try and move forward in her life.
Hey there Michael
Thanks for nice words, I’m thrilled that you like it. And I hope people will end up agreeing that each issue gets better, we’ll see. I’ll have to check out the Michel Janin stuff.
JH III-
I’ll put it to you like this: my wife is a high school English teacher. I’ve slowly but surely convinced her to not turn her nose up at comics. Before she left for work at 5:30 this morning, there she was reading issue number 1. I read it twice last night. It was great to come home from work, relax, and open that up and just enjoy it. I really like the new start with Detective Sawyer. The deal with Renee truly ran it’s course. Thanks again, and can’t wait for the rest of your run.
Comment by Cory Mc 09.15.11 @ 12:42 pmHey there Cory
Glad you dug it, and that your wife read it too. Did she like it? If she did, tell her thanks for me.
Thanks for a brilliant and beautiful first issue, my favorite of the relaunch so far. Big thanks too for maintaining this strong female character in the New 52. Beautiful work!
Comment by RBHSOregon 09.15.11 @ 4:50 pmHey JH III-
She loved it. I got on Amazon and got her the Elegy trade for her to read. She’s like, look at this art! Myself, I’m really looking forward to new villians that you may have coming up. She seems to have a loose affiliation with the Bat-family, and she’s a strong enough character on her own to not have to share the bill with the Joker every month. If you ever come to Chicago for C2E2, Kuma’s on us!
Comment by Cory Mc 09.15.11 @ 5:32 pmWonderful first issue, Mr. Williams. Particularly interested in Kate mentoring Bette, curious to see how Plebe’s Batwoman boot camp continues. Can’t wait for issue two!
Comment by Chris 09.16.11 @ 7:52 amHey there Chris
Thanks, and glad you like where we may be headed.
Thank you for such an amazing great issue! I was lucky enough to get the last copy they had at my local comi book shop. Your art is nothing short of breathtaking and so appropriate for the theme of the book. I can’t wait for what lies ahead.
Also, thank you for including Bette with such prominence. Please be nice to her.
I invite all to check my Batwoman blog.
Comment by JoseVCC 09.17.11 @ 6:26 pmThis issue was well worth the wait! Can’t wait for the next one! Are you going to explore if Bruce Wayne and Kate Kane are cousins? That is the feeling I got from Batman Inc…
Comment by Philippe Demers 09.19.11 @ 4:44 pmAwesome news! I readed today and it´s a great comic-book. Cheers!
Mamen and I returned the last sunday of Aviles and we miss Wendy and you.
take care!
Comment by Pedro Rodriguez 09.20.11 @ 12:22 pmHello Philippe
Glad you like the issue. And no, Kate and Bruce are not cousins, regardless of what Grant may indicate. That would make Bruce Jewish, because Kate is.
Hey there Pedro
I’m thrilled that you dug the issue. Hope you and Mamen had a good time in Aviles. Crazy with work around here. I will email you soon. Give a hug to Mamen from us.
It took me so long to read the issue because I was just gazing at the artwork on every page. Thanks for a beautifully drawn issue and a really intriguing start to the relaunch. It’s been so hard to wait for this but it’s definitely been worth it. I can’t wait for all the stories that are coming up!
Comment by Michelle 09.21.11 @ 2:18 amdug the issue?? Never! 🙂 Great art in a horror darkly story it´s music to my ears!
And great to read some words in spanish lenguage 😉
Hello Michelle
Glad you enjoyed the first issue. Sometimes I do things with art with the intent to slow you down when reading, so you spend more time with the story to get more out of it.
I enjoyed this first issue. I’m a newcomer to Batwoman, and the art was just beautiful.
By the way, I imagine Kate Kane celebrating the end of DADT. What do you think?
Comment by Robin 09.22.11 @ 3:16 pmHello Robin
Welcome aboard. I recommend you pick up Batwoman: Elegy and Batwoman: Zero to get a more full picture of who Batwoman is beyond where we are taking her. And yeah, she most certainly would be celebrating the end of the military’s discriminating policies.

The highest complement I can give you, sir, is that this was utterly and completely worth the wait. Thank you so, SO much to you and the whole creative team for not letting such a wonderful character fade away. May she continue to shine just as brightly for many years to come!
