Mr.Williams! Awesome panel, something very tarantino about it. Love the retro typography too!
Comment by jun00ni 04.21.09 @ 8:25 pmThank you both.
jun00ni, interesting that you mention Tarantino because I’m a definite fan of his work. I was mainly wanting to convey attitude and intensity.
Comment by jwh3 04.21.09 @ 8:42 pmGee, Randy, I don’t know what to say to that, other than thanks.
🙂
Man, can’t belive they let those nipples pass through untouched (thankfully!!!) 🙂
Another beautiful sequence. Can’t wait to get my hands on this book!
To be fair, in other hero books I’ve seen a lot more profoundness with nipple indication than I’ve done here. Glad you’re on board.
Comment by jwh3 04.25.09 @ 6:18 pmWow. Just beautiful!
JH, what brand white ink do you use? It’s so opaque!
Thanks, Derek.
The white I use is Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White. It is decently opaque but has mixing problems sometimes. I tend to use it with just a tiny bit of water to thin it up. I sometimes also need to double coat to get it opaque as well.

Batwoman is wonderful when it is drawn by you 😀
What’s your secret ? ^^
I just wanted to respectfully say that, while there is much I love about your beautiful artwork — the pronounced nipples on Batwoman’s costume actually turned me completely off of this book. As a female comic book reader, I am — let’s be realistic — usually reading books where the artwork is clearly being aimed towards straight men, because straight men still comprise the biggest part of the readership. I know and understand this, and so usually, I can let most of the “male gaze” artwork go. But the unnecessary objectification in this case is too much for me. I’d actually rather that Batwoman’s costume simply has her chest hanging out, rather than giving her a high-necked nipple-revealing outfit. If she’s going to be objectified, at least be honest about it!
It is your book and your artwork to create and draw as you please, and everything about your style (including the Batsuit nipples) haven’t seemed to hurt sales overall. (There’s even a good chance they may have improved those sales.) I’m not adding this comment because I expect you to change your artwork; I just wanted to let you know that you have lost at least one reader because of it.
If you ever do revamp the costume a bit in that regard, I’ll be first in line to give the book another chance. Just FYI. 🙂

I’m sorry you feel that way, and actually my intention when drawing Batwoman is never to objectify. Sometimes sexual modifications are used to say something or acts as symbolic meaning within a story, or as irony. Honestly, I do see what you’re getting at and I try to be conscious of it myself. I tend to get overly focused on showing all the nuances of a very shiny tight outfit and the subtle changes in contours that highlights and shadows and wrinkles would show. So sometimes I think too much about the form and less about what it might be revealing. Rest assured I do my best to keep things realistic but sometimes that isn’t the right thing for an image. Your criticism and how you view the work is appreciated. Thanks for sharing your opinion. And hopefully the newer stuff will appeal to your sensibility more.
