Black, white and grey…
Color by myself, with some major changes to the structure of the design, done digitally…
Logo treatment by me…
Here is the first page in black and white, along with the version I turned in for the lettering layout. Clicky…
Here is the second issue cover (#855) In black and white…
This is the final color work by me. There was also some minor art tweaks done at this point as well, things that bothered me with the drawing. Sometimes it’s more practical or faster to make art changes digitally, things that I might notice after I’ve scanned the image.
Here is the logo treatment my me…
Okay, here is another blog to try an garner support for independent comics. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s bad to read comics from the big publishers, it’s just that there is a lot of independent books that deserve just as much attention. The one I’m talking about today is Brat Pack, by comics master Rick Veitch. Just about every comics fan has read Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns and consider those as benchmarks in the genre of superheroes, but Brat Pack is certainly on that same must read list. However, it seems to me to quite often get overlooked. Brat Pack is definitely a deconstruction for the genre just like Watchmen or Dark Knight, but I dare to say it, a bolder work. I’m sure to get some funny looks when I say that in someways it does it better than the those big two. I guess I really enjoy it’s satirical irreverence. Where Watchmen and Dark Knight assuredly makes us see the pathos of the costume wearing crime fighters and psychology, they both still maintain this sense of subtley causing one to be more inclined to think all this pathos is sorta cool when compared to Brat Pack. Brat Pack is about as subtle as a freight train smashing through a building, stabbing at the genre in ways that make you very squeamish, bringing the pathos of the characters into full light. All done with this wink of black humor and, god, I love it for this. This book really is part of a deconstruction superhero trifecta. The amazing thing about this work is that it is a satire that still gets you to care about the characters that live in the satire. You still get highly immersed in their world. Most satires can’t do this because they become so much about the commentary of their subjects. The other thing I’d like to mention is how much the art just sucks you in. It’s brilliantly detailed with thought provoking layouts, Rick’s rendering is astounding (see example below). I highly recommend all of his works and they can be found at WWW.RICKVEITCH.COM
Brat Pack should be on the same shelf sitting right next to Watchmen and Dark Knight, just so it can smack ’em around a little, or maybe a tickle.
A friend of mine by the name of Alex Sheikman is the creator and artist of the series called Robotika, currently published by the under turmoil Archaia Press. Here’s the the deal, Robotika is a very imaginative book that has very small sales numbers due to a lack of reallly good promotion, and then the publisher ran into some serious troubles causing the book to be unfairly delayed beyond expectations. But now, through some wrangling, Archaia press are moving forward with publishing the remainder of the second series. They are taking an interesting approach by doing this in two double sized editions. The first, reprints the original first issue of the second series along with the unpublished second issue, together in one book. The second double sized issue will contain the unpublished issues 3 and 4. And, to top it off, collections of the first series are still available. This is good creative stuff! This book and his work need all the support it can get.
Alex has made printable coupons with order codes that can be brought to your local comics store to get them to order these books specifically for you. This material is wonderfully strange and unique, all done with a real sense of passion for the work. Alex has a unique creative voice that deserves to be heard and seen by a much wider audience. There needs to be more support for independent voices in comics. So go get those those coupons and take action, it’s best if you bring them in to the stores by April 13th.
And here is where you can find out more information… Alex’s blog and a less updated Website
I was just recently involved in the new Project Rooftop contest as one of the judges. This one was about creating a new Batman. A really cool experience. Go check it out here.
Here is the color version of the Absolute Promethea Volume One book cover, with spectacular rendering efforts by the impeccable Jeromy Cox and my minor design color contributions. It was very strange and interesting for both of us to sort of go through a bit of timewarp to make this feel right for this part of the series. Afterall, we are talking about material that is almost 10 years old. It was a challenge for us to keep things looking right for that time but still have this freshness to it, to fit in to the here and now while also fitting into the past. Time is relative. It felt very surreal but the result looks just about right…click away.
…that announcements have FINALLY been made on what is going on with Batwoman I can officially talk about it. It is true the Batwoman series is gone, but not removed, and now will be taking over Detective Comics. We will have a release in June. Check out the preview on Newsarama and you can expect more teaser images here soon as well. We’ve got a few completed issues ready to go so I’m tempted to show a lot of stuff but I’m going to have meter it out a bit because I don’t want to give away too much.
I just found out tonight that longtime rock’n’roller, Lux Interior, lead singer for the infamous Cramps has died at age 60. Apparently, from reports, that it was due to a heart condition. This saddens Wendy and I greatly, very depressing news. The Cramps have been, for ages, one of the all time greatest alternative rock acts ever. They have been a huge influence, with their twisted take on 50’s rock’n’roll, dubbed psychobilly. Lux was a master showman. Everytime I saw them play live it was an amazing exhilarating thrill ride thrust of energy. You always walked out of a Cramps show amped up so high that you’re afraid of the inevitable crash to follow. Even at their age they could still rock the house down to the floor. Lux brought a certain psychotic but elegant sense to sleaze. The last time we saw them play he was his usual prowling daring self. He was infamous for getting stripped down to nothing but a g-string and fuck me pumps, but on this occasion he was brazen enough to let his god made manhood hang out for the world to see in all of his absurd glory. It was shocking, crazy, funny, and sooo sweetly dirty. He WAS rock’n’roll. Between him and his bandmate and partner Poison Ivy they made the Cramps forever legends of the underground music scene. They’ve been a massive influence on my life in very pleasing insidious ways. Lux will be missed. I think tomorrow I’m going to have a Cramps fest and bliss out to psychobilly at it’s best!!
Black and white pen and ink version…
This process version below has some minor digital tweaking and a couple color element. This is what colorist Jeromy Cox will be using for the final color version, which will be posted when I get it.
Everything should be working now for the store section.
It has been brought to my attention that we are having a slight technical problem with the online store functioning. The webmaster should have this fixed shortly. So if anyone has been trying to purchase please contact me directly and we’ll set you up.
As some of you may have seen elsewhere, Promethea is receiving the Absolute treatment beginning later this year. However, the image that is being used for solicitation is completely wrong and is an old piece. So here is the real Absolute Promethea Volume 1 slipcase cover, color version and black and white version. The color on the final printed version will be gold embossed ink. I will have the book cover itself to show you relatively soon.
Going through some Promethea files for reasons that will be made clear in a later post and thought I would put of some these into blogs. So here is the first one. Click away…
Update: I’m thrilled to say that the guy I voted for actually won this time. Will this mean America can finally move forward from the self-made hell it’s been in for such a long time? Only time will tell. But I can feel it in the air that good things will be coming for America as a nation. I’m very proud of us right now, with the fact that we have elected an african-american as president, and by a significant margin. This alone shows the world that we are still capable of great and positive things.
I normally don’t discuss my political viewpoints to anyone but close friends, but I feel at this time in our country, it’s time. We all need to vote and let our voices be heard and that is why I am casting my vote for Barack Obama and making my decision publicly known. To anyone who disagrees with my choice please take no offense to your views, as I would hope you would take no offense to mine. All of our opinions matter in America. Please vote.
